Have you ever wondered what social media decision-making happens after someone dies? Facebook has been trying to come up with the right answer for quite some time now and hopes to handle such a sensitive issue, as best as possible.

When a Facebook user passes away, those in mourning can ask Facebook to “memorialize” the account, which means the profile of the deceased is only visible to friends, regardless of the privacy settings.

Friday marked the beginning of the new rule—memorialized accounts will be left alone and posts will be visible to whomever the user allowed, according to ABC News.

Facebook is trying to keep a happy balance between what the deceased users and mourners would want.

“We are respecting the choices a person made in life while giving their extended community of family and friends ongoing visibility to the same content they could always see,” Facebook said, according to PC World

The new changes only pertain to memorialized accounts. The company is only aware of a user’s death when they are contacted and informed.

Facebook will continue to ponder the best way to handle such a sensitive situation.
