An internet drinking challenge called neknominate has gone viral and claimed the lives of five people.

According to the Manila Standard Today, the neknomimate started out as a chain drinking game, but soon grew out of control when participants continued to try and top the previous drinkers.

The game involves filming yourself drinking huge amounts of alcohol and then challenging someone else to outdo it.

CNN noted that at least five men under the age of 30 have died after drinking such large quantities of alcohol.

"This is a lethal game," said Dr. Sarah Jarvis, medical adviser for the UK-based charity Drinkaware. "The point about alcohol is that it affects your ability to recognize that you're in danger, and it absolutely affects your ability to react to danger. So we have a double whammy."

There has been some debate as to whether neknominate actually originated in Australia or the United Kingdom, but that really doesn’t matter because not only is the game dangerous, it's dumb. And it is having deadly consequences for those trying it.
