On Wednesday former mayor of New Orleans Ray Nagin was convicted with 20 of 21 counts against him that include bribery, conspiracy, and wire taps during his eight years in office.
According to The Associated Press, the 57 year old Nagin accepted gifts and favors from New Orleans contractors in exchange for jobs. The Democrat was indicted on January 2013, but was remarkably confident going into the verdict, stating “I’ve been at peace with this for a long time. I’m good.”
The Washington Post reports that Nagin is best remembered for his steadfast demeanor during the Hurricane Katrina disaster, and rallying much needed aid to the drowning city during those desperate times.
“I need reinforcements, I need troops, man. I need 500 buses, man.... This is a national disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans.”
Allegedly the crimes against him took place well before and after the storm had passed. Some of the charges against him include jail time for up 3-20 years. Nagin remains free on bail until a sentence date is set.
