A Francis Bacon painting sold for $70 million at auction at Christie's in London and an egg from Jeff Koons went for $23 million.
Bacon's painting, The Portrait of George Dyer Talking, was purchased via anonymous bid through the phone, reports The Guardian. The painting depicts Bacon's future lover who he met as the man was breaking into his house.
Dyer later killed himself in 1971 after the painting was hung in Paris' Grand Palais. The sale was Christie's largest European sale ever. Christie's in New York sold Bacon's painting Three Studies of Lucian Feud in November for $142 million.
According to The Associated Press, Koons' work Cracked Egg (Magenta) went for $23 million, which was at the higher end of sales estimates.
Other works sold at auction, includes a Damien Hirst painting of Mickey Mouse, which was being sold for charity, and 11 unpublished letters Freud sent to Felicity Hellaby, who was his first girlfriend. Drawings, he also did for her, went up for auction as well.
