One week after cutting off his ankle bracelet and fleeing a halfway house, convicted child rapist Eric Hartwell has been captured.
According to CNN, the U.S. Marshals Service said that the fugitive was arrested Friday morning in Norfolk, Va.
Authorities have been trying to track down the child rapist ever since he cut off his GPS monitor and walked out of a group home in Denver.
ABC 7 News notes that courts documents show that the 51-year-old was convicted of raping his neighbor's 6-year-old daughter in 1991 and attempted indecent liberties in 1996 when he had tried to rape a pregnant 17-year-old.
This incident was the second time Hartwell cut off his ankle bracelet and tried to elude authorities. He pulled the same stunt in 2009 at a halfway house in Washington State, he was later picked up by officials in Texas.
After his latest escape, federal authorities vowed that they would not give up the pursuit of the sex offender until he was found.
“We have been relentlessly pursuing Hartwell, day and night, as he fled across the country," said Chief Deputy Kenneth Deal with the U.S. Marshals. "When a dangerous predator is on the loose we don’t stop. Public safety is always our main concern."
