Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil predicts six more weeks of winter on Groundhog Day 2014.
The groundhog, which saw his shadow at approximately 7:30 this morning, was greeted by thousands of people who were waiting for their weather update.
According to Yahoo News, this is the first time the groundhog spectacle has happened on the same day as the Super Bowl. To commemorate the coincidence, the results of the groundhog’s awakening was uniquely told:
“A Super Bowl winner I will not predict,
But my weather forecast, you cannot contradict,
That’s not a football lying beside me
It’s my shadow you see
So, six more weeks of winter it shall be!”
AccuWeather.com reports that the groundhog is correct about the upcoming weather about 80 percent of the time. Their forecasting team believes that winter will only continue in one half of the U.S.
While Phil is the main scene of attraction, the Washington Post, many other areas in the U.S. celebrate Groundhogs Day with their own critters, including Atlanta, Raleigh and Birmingham.
