John Oliver’s HBO show gets a title, April premiere date

John Oliver’s new HBO show has finally earned a title and a premiere date. The network said today that the show will be called Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and kicks off on Sunday, April 27 at 11 p.m. Each episode will run a half hour.

HBO announced the program back in November, just a few months after Oliver’s acclaimed run as The Daily Show host last summer. Oliver, who had been a correspondent for the comedy Central show since 2006, filled in while Jon Stewart was in the Middle East making the film Rosewater.

Last Week Tonight will be an Avalon Television production. The executive producers include Oliver, Tim Carvell, James Taylor and Jon Thoday. Liz Stanton is producing.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now,” Oliver joked in November.

Oliver’s last episode on The Daily Show came in December, when Stewart got the British comedian to tear up with a surprise retrospective of his career.
