Freeheld, a project Ellen Page has been attached to for some time, just got some star power. Julianne Moore and Zach Galifianakis both joined the gay rights drama.
Page is starring as Stacie Andree, while Moore will play her partner, New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester, notes TheWrap. In this true story based on the documentary by Cynthia Wade, Laurel becomes terminally ill and the government will not let her give pension benefits to Stacie. Detective Dane Wells, Laurel’s partner, is shocked to learn that she’s gay and becomes a gay rights activist.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Galifianakis, who is best known for his roles in comedies like The Hangover and Due Date, will play Steven Goldstein, a Garden State Equality activist.
The project was written by Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) and Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas) is going to direct. Wade is producing with Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg, Kelly Bush Novak of Vie Entertainment, Jim Stern of Endgame Entertainment and Jack Selby of Incognito Pictures. Shooting will start this summer.
Moore will be seen in Liam Neeson’s latest action thriller Non-Stop, while Galifianakis has roles in Muppets Most Wanted and Birdman.
