When Larry King left CNN, he didn’t retire, so he could easily take the 9 p.m. slot on the cable news network if chief Jeff Zucker asks. The slot is now vacant after Piers Morgan confirmed this weekend that he is leaving soon.

Morgan confirmed that he’s leaving the show in a New York Times interview. He admitted that his ratings have plummeted, likely due to his clashing ideas about gun control and other issues in America. CNN later confirmed that the British TV personality will be leaving, but no final broadcast date has been determined.

“Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarizing, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it,” Morgan told the Times.

It’s too soon to know who would replace Morgan, but King told The Daily Beast that if Zucker could work out an agreement with his current employers, he’d be happy to return.

“If he talked to the people at Ora TV and they could work it out, I would do it,” King said.

King currently hosts Ora TV’s weekly program Larry King Now, which is available on Hulu and the Russian broadcaster RT.

King, an expert when it comes to television interviews, offered up theories for Morgan’s failure to attract American viewers. He suggested that Morgan was just too different from himself.

“We were very different styles,” King told the Daily Beast. “I asked shorter questions. I left myself out of it. Piers is more of an ‘I’ interview style.”
