Audiences continued to rush to the theaters to see The LEGO Movie, which struck gold for the second weekend in a row. Warner Bros. has pulled off a rare feat - a blockbuster animated release in the middle of February. Meanwhile, a cluster of 1980s remakes fell short and Colin Farrell got his latest bomb.
LEGO has grossed $48.8 million through the first three days, which is only a 29 percent drop from its first three-day weekend. Deadline notes that estimates for the four-day weekend, including Presidents Day, put its total at north of $60 million. That should bring the movie past $140 million after just two weeks in theaters.
About Last Night, the latest movie starring comedian Kevin Hart, had a decent start with $27 million, notes Box Office Mojo. While it’s the best opening for a romantic comedy since 2012’s Think Like A Man (which coincidentally starred Hart, too), it’s lower than Hart’s Ride Along. That comedy opened with $41.5 million last month.
Still, About Last Night did the best among the cluster of ‘80s remakes. It even topped RoboCop, which made $21.5 million over the three-day weekend. That’s even lower than the Total Recall remake’s $25.6 million. It seems that as much as sci-fi fans love Paul Veerhoven’s original films, Sony’s having a tough time drawing wide audiences for the remakes.
George Clooney’s The Monuments Men added $15 million, bringing its total to $43.7 million. Despite mixed reviews, the movie is now Clooney’s highest grossing movie as a director.
Endless Love, the last ‘80s remake opening this weekend, made $13.4 million, 55 percent of which was made on Valentine’s Day. It did earn an A- CinemaScore grade from audiences, but that much of a frontloaded showing is alarming.
Meanwhile, Winter’s Tale with Farrell bombed. The movie only made $7.8 million, the third straight flop for the Irish actor, who also appeared in the previously mentioned Total Recall remake, notes TheWrap. Farrell’s next release is Miss Julie with Jessica Chastain.
