Authorities said a Maryland man has been charged with killing his three-year-old adopted son.

According to The Washington Post, Brian Patrick O’Callaghan was charged on Sunday with first-degree murder and child abuse.

NBC4 noted that police have said that the child was unresponsive when O’Callaghan brought him to a local emergency room earlier this month. He was then transferred to a Children’s hospital where he showed signs of brain trauma. The child, Hyunsu, also suffered from several other injuries and died a few days later.

The Post cited court documents that reveal doctors at the Children’s Hospital concluded that little Hyunsu had bleeding on his brain and was hemorrhaging in his eyes.

“These types of injuries are consistent with acute head trauma and Brian O’Callaghan could not provide an explanation that would cause this type of medical distress to Hyunsu,” police wrote in the court documents.

O’ Callaghan appeared in court on Tuesday. The 36-year-old is being held without bond.
