In a raid last December in Laghman, Afghanistan, a British military hound went missing. Recently, Taliban fighters released a video featuring a captured dog wearing a GPS tracking device, and being held on a leash by a fighter.
Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, told NBC News that "This dog was very important to the Americans. Once we got this dog, the Americans tried their best to get it back but they did not succeed.”
The military dog was believed to be an American military dog by Taliban fighters; however the Pentagon told Fox News that they believed the dog was a British military Belgian Malinois named Colonel, who was working an operation where 6 people were killed, and military equipment was taken.
The December operation was aimed at raiding a compound where a Taliban target was at, however the detail went south when a suicide bomber, possibly a woman, detonated the vest along with improvised explosive devices. Six Americans were killed, and 30 U.S. personnel were wounded.
