According to the most recent report from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology more American women have used medical treatment to have babies than ever before. The report stated that 61,740 babies in 2012 were born with the help of a fertility procedure.

Although American birth rates have been declining since 2007, births using In vitro fertilization (IVF) are on the rise. IVF is a procedure that mixes eggs and sperm in a lab dish.

Although more women are using IVF, the trends of IVF are changing. According to AssociatedPressmore women are using one embryo at a time to avoid multiple births. Only 4 percent of women under 35 used single embryos in 2007 but that rose to 15 percent in 2012.

The treatment is expensive and some situations call for multiple procedures in order to conceive. According to CNN the average cost of one IVF treatment in the United States is $12,400, and that's without the extra medicines the couple may need.
