Volcanoes are a fascinating part of nature and our environment, but they can also be deadly.

Over the past few months, a volcano in Indonesia has been rumbling, with lava spewing out and ash coming out into the air. This led authorities to evacuate thousands of people away from the site.

According to USA TODAY, Mount Sinabung, located in western Sumatra, erupted early Saturday morning, killing at least fourteen people, including a journalist, a teacher, and students. Despite authorities having evacuated people beforehand, decreasing activity from the volcano caused people to come back to the area.

Some of those who died were near the volcano to see the eruptions occurring.

In 2010, Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted, killing over 350 individuals, according to Reuters. Mount Sinabung’s last eruption was in 2010 as well.

Indonesia is in what is known as the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and is used to “seismic upheaval.” In this area, volcanoes and fault lines form an arc around the Pacific Basin.
