A video of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s SUV and motorcade violating traffic laws has surfaced. The video has gotten increased attention this week, especially since it happened just two days after de Blasio announced a new initiative to promote safe driving.
CBS 2 aired the video on Thursday. It shows the caravan ignoring a stop sign in Queens, drive up to 45 mph in a 30 mph zone, speed up to 60 in a 45 zone and more violations. All this came after de Blasio held a news conference for his “Vision Zero” plan, an initiative to promote safer driving in the city.
According to The Associated Press, de Blasio was asked about the video Friday morning while he was going to the gym. He decided to hand the situation over to the NYPD, as many of the drivers in his caravan are NYPD detectives.
“The NYPD provides security protocol for the drivers. Talk to them about that,” de Blasio told reporters. Later, he did add, “We're very serious about 'Vision Zero.' ... We're going to keep moving forward with it.”
Police Commissioner William Bratton also said that he wasn’t “overly concerned” by what was in the video. When he was asked if de Blasio could have asked his drivers to slow down, Bratton replied, “He could raise it, but the security concerns would override any of his concerns.”
