Next year, self-tying “power laces” first seen in 1989’s Back to the Future, will be available to buy. Nike designer Tinker Hatfiel confirmed the shoes will be available in 2015, just like in the film.
Hatfiel confirmed the news to Sole Collector. "Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!" he said.
In 2011, Nike MAG launched an exact replica of the shoes Michael J. Fox’s character Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future II, but they didn’t have the power laces.
According to USA Today, 1,500 pairs of the shoes were auctioned off to benefit The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. When all was said and done, $6 million was raised.
The first pair went for $37,500 on eBay. “The sneaker-heads who love sneakers, the Back to the Future guys who, believe me, are out of their minds, in a good way, thank God for them. And people in the Parkinson's community,” Fox said at the time.
