During the great divide of the country, many lives were changed as families were split by the differing governmental views.

According to Al Jazeera, on Wednesday officials from North and South Korea met up to arrange a reunion for separated families during the 1950-53 Korean War, to be held Feb. 20-25. It will be the first in about three years, if all goes as planned.

War destroys lives and leaves big gaps to be filled. These parted families have been separated for over 60 years. They must squeeze in decades of memories in less than a week, all to be parted for an unknown about of time afterward.

The Unification Ministry said, as reported by Bloomberg, one hundred Koreans from each country were selected for this year’s term of reunions.

What a terrible process the aftermath of the war has created. Outside these circumstances, people can choose whether or not to see their families, but these people were never given that choice.
