The entire town of Northwood, Iowa has been evacuated after a fertilizer fire broke out at the local Northwood Municipal Airport.
The fire started in an airport storage facility often used for crop dusting planes, which contains dangerous chemicals, so the 2,000 residents of the town were told to leave while the blaze is being contained, reports The New York Daily News.
Residents were taken to the Kensett Community Center six miles away from the blaze as the smoke rising from the flames contain chemicals like sulfuric acid. Four people have already sought medical attention at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. Sgr. Scott Bright said, "We're trying to get everyone out of there."
According to The Associated Press, the chemicals in the smoke could cause breathing problems as well as vomiting. The town has not yet been cleared.
Bright told Daily News, "The big thing now is we're waiting to see where this plume goes. It's going to depend on which direction the wind takes us."
Residents reported that cops were just showing up at people's homes and telling them to flee. One resident, Dennis Lau, spoke with the Mason City Globe Gazette, "We didn't know what was going on." He added they were told to get out as quickly as possible. "I got my dogs and left," he added.
