Ex-Pope Emeritus Benedict does not regret stepping down or the path his life has taken.

Reuters received an exclusive interview with Archbishop Georg Ganswein, the head of Pope Francis’ household but is also still working with the former pope, in which he stated that Benedict has no regrets.

“Pope Benedict is at peace with himself and I think he is even at peace with the Lord,” Ganswein said.

BBC reports that Pope Benedict was the first pope to resign his position in 600 years.

“Indeed, he is far from the world but he is present in the Church,” Ganswein said. “His mission now, as he once said, is to help the Church and his successor, Pope Francis, through prayer. This is his first and most important task.”

Genswein went on to explain that Benedict has been in constant study, but remains in high spirits.

The current pope, Pope Francis was elected last March and is the first non-European pope in 1,300 years.
