Mohamoud Abdulle, an Ottawa man, was killed on Friday after a bomb went off at the presidential palace in Mogadishu.
According to CBC News, a vehicle bomb was driven into the outer gate of Villa Somalia, the centre of government in Mogadishu. Seven other attackers rushed into the building, 2 were wearing suicide vests. Abdulle and another high-ranking official, several palace guards, and all of the attackers were killed.
A senior advisor to Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed said that, “Today marks a sad day for Somalia, losing an incredible man who selflessly sacrificed so much for his people and country. His precious life will not be lost in vain. Al Shabab will be defeated,” according to The Star .
Militants with al-Shabaab took responsibility for the attack.
Abdulle directed the office of Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, but spent his time teaching, and working with the Youth Services Bureau.
The former director left a wife and child behind in Ottawa.
