When you’re a 71-year-old rock god, you really shouldn’t have to care about what people think about your hair, but it’s a bit different for Paul McCartney. Considering the Beatles have been all over the place in recent weeks because of the 50th anniversary of Beatlemania in America, people are noticing that McCartney’s hair is a little disheveled. His former Manhattan hairstylist wants people to know though that it’s not his fault.

In an interview with The New York Daily News, published Monday, Guy Thomas recalled how McCartney’s ex-wife, Heather Mills, urged McCartney to get a better haircut in 2004.

“People were making fun of the color. He was coloring his hair on his own using a box color from Duane Reade,” Thomas said. Thomas and his daughter, Janelle Mercadante, would frequently go to the Hamptons to cut and color the “Band on the Run” singer’s hair. They came up with a secret formula for his color.

Things between the two continued to go well, but in 2012, McCartney’s assistants started asking for the formula. Eventually, Mercadante and Thomas gave up the formula, but they stopped working for McCartney.

“He had his assistants call us who were nasty. We really shouldn’t have given him the formula. He felt he was entitled to it,” Mercadante told the Daily News.

Now, Thomas and Mercadante say that people are always complaining to them about how bad McCartney’s hair looks. “His hair looks horrible,” Mercadante said. “It becomes dark initially and then lightens. Whoever is doing it for him leaves the sideburns grey.”

“His cut is inferior and the color is a mess,” Thomas noted.

While McCartney didn’t say anything about his hair this week, the Daily Mail notes that back in 2006, the singer did say that he had been dying his hair long before he met Mills.

At least McCartney’s not wearing the mullet he sported in his Wings days.
