A member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has decided to submit an application to have a 10 foot tombstone placed on U.S. 129 in Gainesville to honor the many chickens who were killed when a tractor trailer overturned on the highway during transport.
Sara Segal submitted the application to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
According to the Gainesville Times, the incident injured a Hall County police officer and the driver of the tractor-trailer. They were both taken to a hospital and later released after treatment. Along with these injuries, dozens of chickens were killed.
The tombstone is supposed to serve the purpose of promoting highway safety.
Peta.org writes that the memorial will encourage people to go vegan to lessen the number of chickens being transported to the slaughterhouse.
“The more people who go vegan, the fewer chickens are in this situation to begin with,” said senior campaign coordinator for PETA, Laura Cascada.
PETA has applied to memorialize animals who have been killed during transport before but has not been successful.
