MGM and Sony's new film RoboCop opened on Wednesday ahead of the holiday weekend and pulled in a meek $2.8 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, that number was enough to at least take over at the top of box office ahead of Warner Bros. The Lego Movie, which earned $2.2 million. Lego Movie has already earned $77.9 million at the box office since opening last weekend.

RoboCop has done well overseas where it opened earlier, taking in about $28 million so far, but it likely doesn't stand a chance at taking the weekend box office away from Lego Movie, especially with other films, like Winter's Tale, Endless Love and About Last Night also opening. The latter two are also remakes.

Deadline reports that the remake couldn't have opened at a worse time as parts of the country are struggling against the elements with heavy storms battering the South and other areas. Theaters in Atlanta were largely closed, with AMC shuttering for the day all 12 of its theaters.

The site also says that about at least 30 other theaters were closed because of the weather up and down the East Coast, in areas like Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

THR notes that the movie studios believe that the poor weather is too blame and not a lack of interest in the film.
