Sandra Fluke, a women’s rights activist who was thrust into the media spotlight when she testified before Congress in support of contraception, may be running for a Congressional seat for California.
Fluke has filed to run as a Democrat in California to replace outgoing veteran Rep. Henry Waxman, who announced his retirement last week. Her name is listed on the California Democratic party site. A delegate confirmed to the Washington Post that she paid the fee, filing for the party’s endorsement.
She has yet to officially announce her candidacy and an adviser told the Post that she only filed because of the deadline and wanted to have the option of running.
After Fluke testified to support insurers paying for contraception under the Affordable Care Act, she was called a “slut” by conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh and he eventually apologized.
According to The New York Daily News, Fluke’s competition for Waxman’s seat would include Wendy Greuel, State Sen. Ted Lieu and author Marianne Williamson.
The California Democratic party starts endorsing candidates this weekend during a conference and before its convention in March.
