A woman has been sentenced to a year behind bars after pretending she had cancer.
Sara Ylen of Lexington, Michigan, claimed her ordeal began in 2001 after James Grissom raped her in broad daylight, which she says gave her cervical cancer.
The story Ylen told guaranteed her money, not only from insurance companies, but from kind hearted people who donated to her when they heard her tale. However, none of what she said was true.
According to The Associated Press, Ylen was treated at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Illinois until 2011 when tests showed her life was not in danger. The cancer hospital has stated there was no record of her as a patient.
Grissom was released in 2012 after a judge dismissed his rape conviction.
Ylen also stated that she had multiple myeloma and received $100,00 in hospice care. During this time, Croswell Wesleyan Church raised over $10,000 for Ylen’s bills and living expenses.
Ylen has been ordered to serve for exactly one year, with credit for 41 days, on two counts, according to The Times Herald. She will also have to pay more than $121,000 in restitution to Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Ylen is already serving five years on a separate case.
