A new trailer has just emerged for Wally Pfister's Transcendence, due to hit theaters April 18.
The film features a star studded cast that includes Johnny Depp, Kate Mara, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Rebecca Hall, and Paul Bettany, among others.
This trailer, the second after the one that premiered in December, as Ain't It Cool News notes, plays up the thriller aspects of the film rather than the philosophical elements on display in the first.
ComicBook.com reports that the film was written by Jack Paglen and is the directorial debut of Pfister, who is best known as the cinematographer on Christopher Nolan's biggest films, including The Dark Knight and Inception.
The logline of the Warner Bros. sci-fi reads like this: a terminally ill computer programmer, played by Depp, downloads his consciousness into one of his creations, only to go mad with the new realm of knowledge available to him. Soon his expanding power and consciousness threatens the whole human race.
It's an interesting story that could be great in the right hands, and Pfister is a visual guru. His work with Nolan and the little revealed in these trailers are testament to that.
But it's still tough to say if he has the directing chops required to handle so many prominent actors. And to hold the story together so it doesn't collapse into a cheesy sci-fi thriller with some lofty, laughable dialogue to make it all seem important.
For now, it looks like something to get excited about.
