Lawmakers are working to lessen the amount of theft on smartphones. Senators, Amy Klobuchar, Barbara Mikulski, Richard Blumenthal, and Mazie Hirono are pushing for the federal bill called the Smartphone Theft Prevention Act that will require a kill switch for every smartphone.
California recently proposed the legislation for a kill switch as previously reported. Requiring smart phones sold and shipped in California to have a kill switch by 2015, the legislation was proposed to lessen the amount of theft by making phones useless once in the hands of thieves.
With the Smartphone Theft Prevention Act, the mandate will require all smartphones to feature a kill switch nationwide as opposed to just California according to Tech Times.
The kill switch will not allow thieves to be able to gain any information from the phone. With the increasingly large amount of smartphones used today, mobile device theft has increased very fast. Today 50 percent of al robberies in major cities, New York City and San Francisco, involve smartphones.
