After serving 20 years in prison for the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the seven men involved will be release, a decision made by the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

The current Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, has asked the Supreme Court to stop the release of the men.

The Prime Minister said that, "The release of the killers of a former prime minister of India and our great leader, as well as several other innocent Indians, would be contrary to all principles of justice,” and said that the assassination of Gandhi was an attack on the soul of India, according to the AFP.

According to Voice of America, the Supreme Court is expected to respond to Singh’s petition on Thursday afternoon.

Gandhi was killed when suicide bomber, Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, detonated his vest. Fourteen others were killed that day. The attack was filmed by a photographer, who had also died during the explosion.
