Shane Carruth has been nominated for Best Director at the Independent Spirit Awards. His film, Upstream Color, could take two awards at this year’s ceremony.
He faces competition from some directors with more notoriety. Other nominees for Best Director include Alexander Payne for Nebraska, J.C. Chandor for All is Lost, Jeff Nichols for Mud, and Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave.
Upstream Color was made for a budget of under $100,000. According to the Telegraph, Carruth said about his film, “It’s opaque, it’s veiled. I think in one viewing that it’s more or less successful, I think that people are keying in to roughly what the narrative is, they’re invested in the emotional arc. But it’s also really thrifty, it’s trying to be as engaging and lyrical as it can, in the hope that revisiting it isn’t arduous. That’s my hope.”
Carruth’s debut independent film, Primer, won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Upstream Color could also take the Best Editing Award at the Independent Spirit Awards. It was also nominated by the Chicago Film Critics Association.
According to Deadline, the Independent Spirit Awards will be held this Saturday, March 1 in Santa Monica. They will be hosted by Patton Oswalt.
