A new study shows that more Americans are using sleeping pills at night.

The study, which was published in the February addition of the journal "Sleep," suggests that insomnia may be becoming more apparent in adults as the use of supplements is on the rise.

According to ABC News, the study reviewed over 32,000 individuals and found that the number of people using sleeping pills went up one percent from the 1999 study.

Insomnia causes people to have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep, causing drowsiness throughout the day.
Sleepio reports that insomnia medication is more commonly used by females. Over half of those who were using medication to treat insomnia also admitted to using various other sleeping medicines.

The National Institutes of Health reports that prescription medication, while helpful, can also cause other issues like daytime sleepiness and sleepwalking. The NIH suggests that individuals try having a regular sleeping pattern, and avoid eating in bed to help with insomnia.
