Early numbers have been strong so far for Sony's latest console, the PlayStation 4, which just topped 5.3 million in sales worldwide.

Sony made the announcement through its PlayStation Twitter, reports PCWorld. CEO Andrew House also released a statement saying, "I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to play throughout and beyond the holiday season."

He added that according to the NPD Group's sale data, the PS4 was the bestselling console during the month of January. When the news of the PS4's January sales first were reported, executive John Koller said that the console sales were "nearly doubling the nearest next-gen competitor," an obvious dig at competitor Microsoft and its Xbox One.

According to The Guardian, it took Sony less than three months for the PS4 to reach 5.3 million in sales. Sales will only likely increase as the console has yet to debut in Japan, but will at the end of the week.

The Xbox One hasn't exactly been doing bad on its own, despite its $100 higher price tag, as it shipped 3.9 million units by late January and sales could be boosted in the following month when the highly anticipated exclusive Titanfall is released.
