A West Chester University student made extremely difficult shots during and a Rams basketball halftime challenge, but the school has refused to give him the $10,000 prize money.
According to the Sporting News, Jack Lavery, a freshman at the university needed to make four shots in 25 seconds. The shots consisted of a layup, a free throw, a 3-pointer and a half-court shot. He made them all, but University officials deemed that the student would not receive the prize money because it took him two tries to make the half-court shot.
WPVI reported that after Lavery successfully made the previous shots, he went for the half-court shot and missed. However, the clock continued to run so Lavery threw up another shot and made it just before the buzzer went off.
University officials maintain that the 18-year-old, who was randomly selected from the crowd for the challenge, needed to make all four shots in a row. However, he thought he won and was informed of the bad news only after the roaring applause from the crowd died down.
"We are hopeful that the university will award him with $10,000 for his unbelievable feat like they promised," his father Bill said. "We kind of feel a little let down. They made him believe he won after the shot. It's kind of frustrating."
The university maintains that Lavery signed a contract which stated the rules including only one attempt at the half-court shot.
