A teenager in Minnesota has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after a fatal “knockout game” punch.
According to WCCO, on Thursday a Stearns County judge sentenced 18-year-old Jesse Smithers to 10 years in prison for the fatal blow that caused Colton Gleason’s death.
In Sept. 2012, Gleason and two female companions were walking down an alley way when a car pulled up beside them and stopped. The then 17-year-old Smithers got out of the car and punched Gleason in the head.
When the 20-year-old Gleason fell to the ground and was knocked unconscious, the teen indicated that it was a “knockout game” punch and then got back in the car that drove off.
Gleason died after falling and hitting his head on the concrete.
KMSP reported that the Stearns County attorney filed a motion early on in the case to have Smithers tried as an adult.
Smithers admitted to delivering the punch and was convicted of 2nd-degree murder.
