Warner Bros. The Lego Movie has passed the $200 million milestone at the worldwide box office. The movie is currently holding strong for another week at number one at the North American box office, fighting off films such as RoboCop and 3 Days to Kill.
Lego Movie has been a breakout hit for Warner Bros. which as a studio, is not known for their animation work. The film only cost $60 million to make and a sequel has already been approved with a release date of May 26, 2017.
The Lego Movie features the voices of Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pratt and Morgan Freeman.
3 Days to Kill only took in around $12 million dollars over the weekend, $4 million coming in on Friday. Sony’s latest disaster movie Pompeii average around $10 million and was not the success the studio had hoped for.
In North America alone with the close of this weekend box office sales the movie will come close to making domestically $185 million in just 17 days since it has been released, Variety reported.
Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman spoke about the success of the family friend film and that he was honored to be working with such a team of talented individuals, The Hollywood Reporter added.
"The Lego Movie is everything we hoped it would be, and then some: a big, fun, moviegoing experience for the whole family. Congratulations to the phenomenal voice cast and to directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee for their unwavering commitment to bringing this ambitious project to the screen," said Fellman.
