This week in hip-hop, Pharrell Williams collaborates with Major Lazer and is set to perform at the Academy Awards. Plus, Missy Elliott talks about why her new album may take longer than anticipated.
Recently, Pharrell told Complex that his upcoming album will not feature rapping. Just a short time later, Williams recanted his statements in an interview with Fuse where he stated, "I'm still going to rap...There was a misunderstanding. But for what I was referring to at the moment, that's not what I'm going to do. But I'm going to rap, though".
So it comes at no surprise that this week Pharrell teamed up with Major Lazer on 'Aerosol Can'.The track features Williams' rapping over vibrant, dancehall-infused rhythms that are typical from Major Lazer. Listen to it here.
Following a successful night at the Grammys, Pharrell Williams will perform 'Happy', from Despicable Me 2, at the 86th Academy Awards. The single is also nominated for Best Original Song. According to The Hollywood Reporter if Williams wins this award he will become the third rapper ever to receive an Oscar.
In a recent interview with Yahoo's "The Yo Show" Missy Elliott discusses her return to music. Complex reports that we may have to wait a little while longer for a new album from Missy.
"When I create something, it's got to be special. And it can't just be throw something out there because I feel like I'm Missy. I've got to feel like what I'm giving the fans is 100 percent and that it's game-changing. I don't just throw out microwave records," says Missy.
She also reflects on the state of music relative to the last time she released a record, "It used to be like your album was such a classic that it could go on for two years and then you drop another joint. But it's now like this (snaps). But your brain needs time to refresh because things happen in your life where, you know, you can then write something else instead of the same three topics. Like, how many times are we going to talk about the club?" Watch the rest of the interview at Yahoo
