Singleton had been circling the project earlier, as had "Training Day's" Antoine Fuqua.
Production on the untitled film is scheduled to start in June.
Shakur fans will also soon get the chance to celebrate the late rapper with a Broadway musical, "Holler If Ya Hear Me," set to begin previews at the Palace Theatre on May 26.
Tupac Shakur’s awaited biopic finally took another step ahead.
John Singleston signed on to direct and produce a movie about the rapper Shakur, who was shot to death in 1996 during a drive-by.
"His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation," said Singleton according to, Rolling Stone
Singleton and Shakur shared a special bond due to their previous work. In 1993, Singleton directed Shakur in “Poetic Justice.”
Shakur was a rapper with poetic talent and used his words to discuss social issues. He showed true talent in the acting industry but it was cut short when he died at 25 in an unsolved Las Vegas shooting.
The project tried starting up, but saw rejection during a legal issue with Shakur’s mother, Afeni. Now, she is a huge part of the biopic—she’s even an executive producer according to The Daily News
The film is expected to start production in June.
