A United Nations panel released a report on the state of North Korea on Monday, claiming that the brutal militaristic state "does not have any parallel in the contemporary world."
According to CNN, North Korean officials employ rape, torture, starvation, murder and slavery in an effort to force "the population into submission."
The report comes from the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights (COI)in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea who released findings from an extensive research into the conduct of the intensely secretive nation. The final report is based on more than 320 witness reports and runs about 400 pages.
The commission will refer its findings to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to pursue prosecution.
UPI reports that the commission has also sent a letter containing their most pertinent and disturbing findings to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, alerting him of their intentions of pursuing criminal action.
However, North Korean ally China will likely use its veto power as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council to keep the human rights violations from going to the ICC.
The report is a disturbing read that details the actions traced to the highest government officials of the isolated nation, noting that the state "does not content itself with ensuring the authoritarian rule of a small group of people, but seeks to dominate every aspect of its citizens' lives and terrorizes them from within."
