Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has decided he will sign a draconian anti-gay bill after all.
With heavy opposition from Western nations and human rights groups, the president had made it appear in January like he would not be signing the bill, reports Reuters, but it seems he has changed his mind. The bill has been in the works for nearly five years.
The news follows a presentation made to Museveni by the National Resistance Movement party, which presented their findings that they didn't find any scientific reason for homosexuality. Spokesperson Anite Evelyn said, "(Museveni) declared that he would sign the bill since the question of whether one can be born a homosexual or not had been answered."
According to The Associated Press, the Ugandan president had originally shelved the bill as too harsh. The anti-gay bill could sentence people to life in prison for certain homosexual acts.
Reuters notes that few in African nations are openly gay as it is seen there as taboo and many are treated poorly or even violently if found to be gay.
