Veteran NBC news anchor, Tom Brokaw, has revealed he’s been diagnosed with cancer. The 74-year-old newsman released a statement and remains optimistic about his diagnosis, which he found out about in August.

During treatment, Brokaw has continued to work on special assignments for the network.

"With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come," he explained, People reports. "I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter."

Brokaw previously hosted NBC Nightly News and he’s currently in Sochi covering the Winter Olympics. He was diagnosed with a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells in the bone marrow called multiple myeloma.

LA Times reports Brokaw found out he had multiple myeloma at the Mayo Clinic over the summer.
