The results are in and the most miserable state goes to – West Virginia. Yikes.
The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index interviewed more than 176,000 people from all 50 states in America, measuring the physical and emotional health of Americans, according to USA Today.
The survey asked participants to respond to a large range of questions. The results contained several factors such as employment, education, health and environment which gave a state a high or low well-being score. In states with high scores, residents were seemed to be healthier (i.e. exercised often and smoked less). These states also included lower obesity rates and other common health problems.
According to E! News, West Virginia tied for the second lowest life-expectancy rate. Other miserable states include Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama and Ohio.
On the positive side, Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota were rated as the most content states. North Dakota came in at the least miserable state in America.
"Due in large part to profitable oil discoveries in the region, North Dakota's economy grew by more than 13% in 2012, by far the fastest growth nationwide," the survey said.
The state also moved up the most from number 19 to number 1 on the list.
