The Writers Guild of America announced their award winners for this year.
Taking top honors were Her by Spike Jonze and Captain Philips by Billy Ray, according to the Associated Press.
Her is a story from Spike Jonze. It is the story of a writer who develops a relationship with a newly operating system. The film was written and directed by Spike Jonze. It starred Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, and Scarlett Johansson. Jonze has also written Where the Wild Things Are and the short, Scenes from the Suburbs. Jonze's Her is nominated for five Academy Awards, including best original screenplay and best picture.
Captain Philips is the story of a hijacking of a US cargo ship. The screenplay was based on the book A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea by Richard Phillips and Stephan Talty, according to Variety. It starred Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi. Billy Ray, the screenplay writer, is known for The Hunger Games and Color of Night. Captain Philips is nominated for a best picture Oscar.
The Writers Guild Awards are a precursor to Hollywood's big honors, the Academy Awards on March 2.
