The Writers Guild of America held ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles to honor writers in film and television.
Taking the award for original screenplay this year was Spike Jonze for Her. Billy Ray won for adapted screenplay for Captain Phillips, according to the Associated Press.
The awards for Ray and Jonze were announced at the New York ceremonies. According to Variety, Ray and Jonze were not present at the New York event. The event was hosted by Colin Quinn at the Edison Ballroom. The Los Angeles ceremonies were hosted by Brad Garret at the JW Marriott. The event started after 6 p.m. and trailed behind the New York festivities by an hour.
Many others took home awards for their work. Among the guild's TV winners were Sam Catlin, Vince Gilligan, Peter Gould, Gennifer Hutchison, George Mastras, Thomas Schnauz and Moira Walley-Beckett for their drama series, Breaking Bad. For comedy series, Simon Blackwell, Roger Drew, Sean Gray, Armando Iannucci, Ian Martin, Georgia Pritchett, David Quantick, Tony Roche and Will Smith won for Veep. Awardees for new series were Kate Barnow, Rick Cleveland, Sam Forman, Gina Gionfriddo, Keith Huff, Sarah Treem and Beau Willimon for the show, House of Cards.
