Focus Features has scheduled Wish I Was Here, the first film from Zach Braff since Garden State, for a July release date.
Universal’s Focus label acquired the film last month after its Sundance screening. The film earned several positive responses from critics. Focus reportedly spent $2.75 million to pick up the film.
Deadline reports that the distributor has now set July 18 for its release. It will hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles first before expanding the following week. More cities will be added on Aug. 1.
Of course, Wish I Was Here was at the center of headlines last year, since it was partly funded by Braff’s own fans. The former Scrubs star was criticized for using Kickstarter to fund the project, but it didn’t deter fans from donating. He raised $3.1 million using the site.
Braff’s film also features Mandy Patinkin and Kate Hudson. It is Braff’s first film since Garden State, which was released back in 2004.
Box Office Mojo’s schedule shows that Focus also rescheduled Dom Hemingway for April 2 rather than April 4. That film was directed by Richard Shepard and features Jude Law with Emilia Clarke.
