With strong buzz on social media and a dedicated fan base, 300: Rise of an Empire has been dominating at the box office this weekend. 300: Rise of an Empire is projected to make over $42 million dollars this weekend.

Variety reported that Rise made over $17.7 million on Friday night and took in $3.3 million in late-night showings on Thursday.

The Hollywood Reporter added that the sequel had a budget of $110 million from Warners and Legendary pictures.

300: Rise of an Empire had a strong social media following before the film was released and the 300 film which was released almost seven years ago has a huge cult following.

Fox-DreamWorks Animation Mr. Peabody & Sherman will most likely come in second place at the box office bringing in around $31.5 million weekend. Peabody made over $8 million on Friday alone.

This time last year Oz the Great and Powerful made over $79 million at the box office. So even with strong numbers Peabody and the 300 sequel will not top Oz.

The first 300 made over $70 million on an opening weekend and the film made $456 million worldwide.
