Steve McQueen's 12 Yeats A Slave won big at the Film Independent Spirit Awards Saturday night, winning many of the main awards.
The period drama managed to win five awards on the night, best feature, director, screenplay, cinematography and supporting female, reports the Los Angeles Times. The film didn't win in two other categories it was nominated in: best male lead or supporting male.
12 Years could win even more awards Sunday night at the Academy Awards where it has nine nominations.
Screenwriter John Ridley said as he was accepting his award, "I cannot tell you, as much as I thought the memoir and Solomon's words and work was special, I had no concept until I saw the movie for the first time."
Other films with multiple wins include Dallas Buyers Club, which won for best male lead and supporting male, going to Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, respectively, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Spirit Awards were hosted by Patton Oswalt on a beach under a tent, making for a much different experience than most award shows.

Best International Film: Blue is the Warmest Color
Best First Feature: Fruitvale Station
Best First Screenplay: Bob Nelson Nebraska
17th Annual Plaget Producers Award: Toby Brooks and James M. Johnston
Robert Altman Award: Mud
