Seventeen civilians were killed in Afghanistan at a checkpoint near a market when a suicide bomber detonated explosives hidden in a rickshaw that he was driving.
This attack is believed to be in protest of the upcoming presidential elections that will take place on April 5, where a new leader will be appointed.
No group has taken responsibility for the attack, however the area is known to be active with Taliban and militant groups, who have sworn to disrupt the elections, according to Time.
The Afghan Interior Ministry said that among the dead were three police officers and condemned whoever initiated the attack, according to LA Times.
The people who were killed were innocent civilians who were at the market shopping for food. Along with the three police officers, women and children were also killed.
As a new president comes to term, troops are also preparing to leave Afghanistan at the end of the year. Whoever wins the vote will replace current President Hamid Karzai, who cannot seek reelection.
