The Friday box office was easily led by 300: Rise of an Empire as other wide new release Mr. Peabody & Sherman followed far behind.
Following on late Thursday earnings of $3.3 million, 300 earned $17.7 million in its first full day, way ahead of the competition, reports Forbes. The Warner Bros. and Legendary film is expected to make about $42 million for the weekend.
The $110 million sequel is also seeing promising returns in overseas sails, where it has already earned $12.1 million.
The latest DreamWorks Animation film Peabody earned $8 million on Friday, which isn't an especially strong start for the studio and the film is expected to earn about $30 million on the weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the animated film, which has a budget of $145 million, has done well overseas where it has earned about $40 million,
Last weekend's top film, the Liam Neeson vehicle Non-Stop earned $4.7 million and will likely make $15.1 million. The Lego Movie continues to show signs of life after grossing $2.5 million and could snag the third spot for the weekend with an expected $16 million.
Son of God fell harshly from the last weekend with $2.7 million. After winning big at the Academy Awards, 12 Years A Slave saw a nice increase in ticket sales with $585,000 for the day and likely $2.3 million for the weekend.
The new limited-release film The Grand Budapest Hotel has had a great start after opening in four theaters. Wes Anderson's latest grossed $260,477 for the day and will likely make about $800,000 for the weekend, which is huge since it's only in four theaters.
