The new side project of Animal Collective frontman David Portner, Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks, revealed the track “Strange Colores” earlier this week in a trippy, fittingly vibrant music video.
Slasher Flicks is camp-horror-themed band inspired by works like Beetlejuice and Michael Jackson's Thriller. In addition to the eponymous head of the band, the group consists of ex-Dirty Projectors member Angel Deradoorian and drummer Jeremy Hyman of the band Ponytail. They have previously released the uplifting, disco-infused track “Little Fang” in a music video that was directed by Avey's sister Abby Portner and starred a Muppet cat from Jim Henson's Creature Shop,
Compared to "Little Fang"'s straightforward wackiness, “Strange Colores” is a chaotic, freaky romp of a pop song. The band goes all in with high-energy electronic buzzes and tongue-twisting vocals that wouldn’t be out of place in some of the noisier tracks on Animal Collective’s recent releases, but keeps things from getting too out there by containing it all in fun riffs and simple hooks.
Slasher Flicks’ debut album Enter the Slasher House will be released on April 7th through Domino Records. The group has also announced a tour in support of the album beginning in next month.
