Including bands of the British new wave of music in the 1990’s such The Verve, Oasis, Elastica, and the like, the BBC is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the genre across its television and radio stations.
According to The Hollywood Reporter the BBC will devote a season, entitled Britpop at the BBC, and will play out on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6 Music and TV channel BBC Four on April 6-11.
The Britpop scene sparked after the grunge movement in the U.S. lead by groups Suede and Blur, evoking music and lyrics uniquely British, a spawn of the first British Invasion lead by The Who, The Beatles and The Kinks. Exploding outside of England into the U.S., Britpop hit stateside with Oasis, Elastica, and The Verve heading up the charge.
The BBC is planning to include a weeklong return of the legendary Evening Session on Radio 2, several documentaries, plus interviews with artists who were pivotal to the movement. There will also be a Top 30 countdown on channel 6 Music, asking U.K. listeners to vote for the song that sums up Britpop for them.
Heading into the modern day era, and taking it globally, the BBC will also bring the celebration online, providing exclusive archive clips and photo galleries.
