Hustle and Flow and Black Snake Moan director Craig Brewer is set to helm MGM’s remake of the 1980 film The Idolmaker.

Justin Timberlake, Hawk Koch and Gene Kirkwood will be producing the film, according to Variety. This new version of The Idolmaker has been in development since 2011 after MGM’s 2010 brief period of bankruptcy.

As told by Indiewire, the original rendition of The Idolmaker starred Ray Sharkey and was directed by Taylor Hackford. The film is a fictionalized version of music producer Bob Marcucci’s successes in the ‘50s and ‘60s, when he discovered Frankie Avalon and Fabian and was propelled into stardom.

Little is known about the project as of yet, and a writer hasn’t been chosen.

Cinema Blend reported that Brewer was previously attached to Gangster Princess of Beverly Hills a biopic of drug mule and faux-Samsung-heiress Lisette Lee. Production status on that film is unknown.

Brewer’s latest film was the 2011 reboot of Footloose which starred Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough.
